How to (Secretly) Figure Out Your Girlfriend's Ring Size
The Holiday Season is coming up. You know how much your girlfriend loves jewelry. This year, you want her to open her gift from you and gasp with delight. You're going to buy her a new ring! Yet, buying a ring is much trickier than buying a new necklace or a new pair of earrings. While a pin may be one-size-fits-all, a ring certainly is not. How can you find the right size without ruining the surprise you have in mind?
How to (Secretly) Figure Out Your Girlfriend's Ring Size
There are actually quite a few ways to figure out your girlfriend's ring size. A few tried and true favorites include:
Go with the average ring size
The average ring size for most women is a size 6. We also know that the average sized woman in the U.S. is about 5-feet 4-inches tall. You can go off these averages to figure out her ring size. If she’s shorter or weighs a little more, you can go up a size or two. If she’s thinner and taller, maybe try a size down.
Try a larger size and resize it later
If you're worried you won't get it right, it's a much better idea to err on the side of too large rather than too small. It’s much easier for a professional to size down than it is up. Sizing up is trickier as the jeweler will need to add extra gold, bronze, or other metals. Try going with a larger ring size than you think she wears, just to be on the safe side. Keep in mind that rings with side stones or pave bands can be tougher to resize, so you want to be pretty set with the correct size when you purchase rings with details such as these.
Do some snooping around
It's a good idea to use her other jewelry as a baseline, but you'll need access to her jewelry box without her knowledge. If you want to be subtle, patience is the name of the game. Do your detective work while she sleeps or is out of the home. You still have plenty of time before the Holiday Season, so there's no reason to panic and rush.
Take one of her rings and place it on a piece of paper. Draw a circle on the inside and outside of the ring. You will want to do this several times to make sure your ring traces look consistent and can indicate the correct ring size.
This one comes with a big warning! Checking her jewelry box is one of the easiest ways to figure out her ring size, but be careful when going with this option. A ring she wears on her thumb or middle finger will be very different in size than the one she wears on her ring finger.
Ask for help from others
Don't attempt this on your own! Her mom, sister, and your friends are all fantastic resources to help you figure it out. It's very possible that someone close to her either already knows the answer you're searching for or can slyly ask her without raising suspicions. One step better, ask the friend to take your girlfriend jewelry shopping just for a fun afternoon out. That way, your partner will not only tell your friend what size she wears but also drop a few hints about what styles she likes too!
Go with a different sizing option
Some of our rings, like our "Plumage" Crystal Resin Feather Double Ring, have Small, Medium, and Large sizing options instead of the traditional number scale. This makes it much easier to get the right size because it doesn't need to be exact. When all else fails, go for a wider range of size! Then, you're much more likely to be correct.
